2017 Citizen of the Year
The 2017 SCCCMH Citizen of the Year, Honorable James E. D. Doern, was honored at the “Mental Health Matters Benefit” held at Longfellows Restaurant on May 3, 2017
Jude Doern was honored for his leadership in addressing the unmet needs of people living with mental illness in Saratoga County. His community commitment dates to the early 1990s, beginning with his work with Rotary and continuing through the present with his dedication to a number of advocacy and human services organizations. As Saratoga Springs City Court Judge for 18 years, he recognized the impact of unmet mental health, addiction, housing, transportation, and employment needs on people’s ability to function happily and productively in the community. As a result, in 2015, Judge Doern was the force behind the establishment of a group of human services providers interested in improving services and the coordination of care. This group accomplishments include additional services being introduced to the County Correctional Facility, improvement in public transportation increasing access to essential addition services, and steps to improve public health and safety during the summer concert season.
Speaking on behalf of Judge Doern’s accomplishments and distinguished career were Penny Cronan, Saratoga Springs citizen, Michael Prezioso, Commissioner, Saratoga County Department of Mental Health and Addition Services, and Stephen Rodriguez, former law partner of Judge Doern.
